Nikkor 800mm
Nikkor 800mm
The 800mm is one of the most specialised lenses in my kit, used when maximum reach is essential. For wildlife that cannot be approached closely, this lens allows me to isolate subjects and capture behaviour from a respectful distance without disturbing the scene.
Despite its focal length, the lens remains remarkably manageable in the field thanks to Nikon’s Phase Fresnel (PF) design. This significantly reduces the size and weight compared with traditional super-telephoto lenses, making it far more practical to carry and work with during long days outdoors.
In wildlife photography, reach often determines whether a moment can be captured at all. The 800mm allows me to frame distant subjects cleanly while maintaining strong detail and subject separation.
It is a lens used selectively, but when the situation demands it, nothing else in the kit can replace it.

Why It Earns Its Place in My Field Kit
Wildlife often keeps its distance, and some behaviours are only possible to photograph with significant reach. The 800mm makes those moments accessible while still delivering excellent image quality and subject isolation.
Thanks to the lighter PF design, it remains practical to carry and deploy in the field — something that was far more difficult with previous generations of super-telephoto lenses.
It is not a lens used for every situation, but when distance becomes the defining challenge, it is the tool I rely on.
